FAMILY PLANNING COUNCIL OF IOWA

Education

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS:

We feel that information is essential to any good family planning program. We place a strong focus on education and information to the patients we serve, the general public, and the professionals who provide the services.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION:

We especially feel that community education programs are important. During 1995, the Council and its delegate agencies provided the following:

These programs addressed a variety of topics such as:

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION:

Because we want to make sure that the health care professionals providing the family planning services are as up to date as possible in their knowledge, we give workshops and training on topics which help increase their skills and knowledge.

We're also approved as a provider of Nursing Continuing Education Units in Iowa. This lets us work with nurses in Iowa to make sure that they are appropriately licensed and current in their training and education.

We have a resource library from which we lend materials to professionals in the field.

EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS:

We produce educational materials which can be used for patient education or for education to the general public. Some of those materials include:

YOUNG FATHERS: WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT? YOUR RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES. This booklet tells young men about their legal rights and legal responsibilities as fathers under Iowa law .

FACTS ABOUT BIRTH CONTROL. This handout describes the different methods of birth control, their advantages, disadvantages and how effective they are.

FACTS ABOUT SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES. This handout describes the different Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), symptoms, treatment, and prevention.

COMMUNICATING ABOUT SEX: PARENT AND CHILD. This manual is designed to help professionals conduct workshops with parents on how to enhance their communication skills.
